MWABA Newsletter: Goalball, Tandem Biking, Boat Tour, Beeping Bake-Off, and Yoga

July 6, 2025

Hello MWABA,

Join us for goalball, tandem biking, an Anacostia boat tour, the Beeping Bake-Off, yoga, a 5k, a camping trip in Shenandoah, and check out the athlete spotlight on ZaNyiah Bell!

Goalball

· Come to Goalball on July 12th from 10 AM to 1 PM at 1480 Girard St. NW, DC.

Tandem Biking

· We’re riding from Eastern Market Thursday night, Bethesda Friday night, and Eastern Market Saturday morning at 9 a.m. this week. Sign up here by Tuesday at 8 p.m.: https://forms.gle/a3fC438hzv9aH8m89

Anacostia Boat Tour

· Sign up by Wednesday, July 9, at 11:59 p.m. for an Anacostia River boat tour on Saturday, July 12th, from 3-4 p.m. MWABA is excited to partner with Anacostia Riverkeeper for a private boat tour. This is a great chance to explore the river’s history, ecology, and ongoing restoration efforts. We’ll likely meet at Navy Yard around 2:30 and walk over to the dock as a group. More details will be shared with those who register. The tour is limited to 21 participants, and guide dogs are welcome. Please fill out the registration form to sign up. It’s first come, first served. Once we reach capacity, we’ll start a waitlist. A confirmation email will go out a few days before the tour with final logistics. You can learn more about the tours on this webpage under the FAQ section.

Beeping Bake-Off

· Join us on Sunday, July 13, as we host our 3rd annual Beeping Bake-Off Fundraiser! We will be meeting at the Jefferson Middle School Field (801 7th Street SW) from 1:00-3:00. For the bake-off portion, anyone can participate by making a favorite dessert and entering the competition. For a minimum donation of $10, you can taste all of the baked goods and vote on the winner. A prize will be awarded to our top vote getter. We will also be playing a fun game of Beep Kickball at this event. Even if you don’t wish to participate in the bake-off or kickball, you can still come hang out. This is always a fun event and a great opportunity to socialize with other members. Donations from this fundraiser will support MWABA’s various programs. Sign up to participate and find additional details about the event at this link: https://forms.gle/4dk3LYgn3KiwsfEz8

Yoga

· Yoga is back on Saturday, July 19 at 11:15 AM at Circle Yoga in northwest D.C. Sign up here: RSVP for Yoga!

Joyfully & Faithfully Fit 5k and Book Launch

· Join us on Saturday, July 19th at Great Country Farms for the release of Lindsey Rambo’s book, Joyfully and Faithfully Fit: The Extra Mile. Proceeds from the 5k will help launch the Achilles Virginia Chapter in the Shenandoah Valley. Proceeds from book sales will go to MWABA! Register here: mwaba.inc to let us know that you’re coming to the event to do the 5k and/or to help Lori table at the event.

Athlete Spotlight

· For our latest Athlete Spotlight, we featured one of our youth members, ZaNyiah Bell. ZaNyiah led her team to the championship of MWABA’s Youth Goalball Tournament held earlier this month. We were excited to have our youth participants learn from our adult goalball players. Everyone did great, and we thank ZaNyiah for sharing about the experience. Check out ZaNyiah’s Athlete Spotlight here: https://gomwaba.org/2025/06/27/athlete-spotlight-zanyiah-bell/

August Shenandoah Camping Trip

· We’re heading to Big Meadows Campground in Shenandoah National Park on Friday, August 22 for a weekend of car-assisted camping, hiking, campfires, games, stargazing, and unplugged community time. This is a two-night trip (Friday to Sunday), not a local overnight like Lake Fairfax—it’s about 2.5 hours away, one-way, without traffic. Because of that, we’re asking everyone to only sign up if you can commit to the full weekend.

· We’ve reserved two group sites (D167 and D163), which gives us space for up to 30 people and 6 vehicles. The campground has potable water, flush toilets, and coin-operated showers, making it a great setup for both experienced campers and first-timers. We’ll share pickup points, carpool plans, and gear needs as the date gets closer. If something changes and you can’t come, we’ll just ask that you give us a heads-up as early as possible so we can offer your spot to someone else. We’ll aim to hold a quick Zoom call closer to the date to finalize logistics.

· Please fill out this form to help us start planning.

Other Activities

· Disability Pride Outside on July 26th from 9:30 am – 1 pm at Black Hill Regional Park: Montgomery Parks has invited MWABA to programaccess or 301-495-2581.

Besides registering using the Eventbrite link, if you would like to attend, we are working on organizing rides to and from the event. If you’re interested in attending, please reach out to Kevin at kevin.andrews94. If you’re able to drive, please let Kevin know how many people you can take in your vehicle.
