MWABA Newsletter: Catoctin Hike, Goalball, Tandem Biking, Boat Tour, Camping Trip

June 22, 2025

Hello MWABA,

Join us for hiking with Achilles in Catoctin, goalball, tandem biking, an Anacostia boat tour, a camping trip in Shenandoah, and more!

Catoctin Hike

· Sign up for the joint MWABA/Achilles hike on Sunday, June 29th by this Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. We could use another driver or two, so please email Kevin at kevin.andrews94 if you can drive. We’re going to Catoctin Mountain Park, which is about an hour from DC. We’ll meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Medical Center metro. We plan to do an out-and-back hike (about 3.5-4 miles) to Chimney Rock, which is a fairly strenuous hike, but we can offer easier options for those who prefer that. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/o5zM1fe8sbhRadxz7

Goalball

· Come to Goalball on June 28th from 10 AM to 1 PM at 1480 Girard St. NW, DC.

Tandem Biking

· Sign up here by Tuesday at 8p.m. for our Thursday night ride from Eastern Market and our Friday night ride from Bethesda: https://forms.gle/a3fC438hzv9aH8m89

· Please join MWABA for Open Streets DC at Capitol Hill on Saturday June 28th, 2025! The event is from 9:00-3:00 and we will be tabling and offering tandem demonstrations. There will also be live hourly programs in yoga, music, and dance accessible to all ages and abilities. Please sign up at the link below if interested in volunteering with us at this fun event: https://forms.gle/u5gVLZqPA6E2rAPz7

Anacostia Boat Tour

· MWABA is excited to partner with Anacostia Riverkeeper for a private Anacostia River boat tour on Saturday, July 12, from 3 to 4 p.m. This is a great chance to explore the river’s history, ecology, and ongoing restoration efforts. We’ll likely meet at Navy Yard around 2:30 and walk over to the dock as a group. More details will be shared with those who register. The tour is limited to 21 participants, and guide dogs are welcome. Please fill out the registration form to sign up. It’s first come, first served. Once we reach capacity, we’ll start a waitlist. A confirmation email will go out a few days before the tour with final logistics. The deadline to sign up is Wednesday, July 9, at 11:59 p.m. You can learn more about the tours on this webpage under the FAQ section.

August Shenandoah Camping Trip

· We’re heading to Big Meadows Campground in Shenandoah National Park on Friday, August 22 for a weekend of car-assisted camping, hiking, campfires, games, stargazing, and unplugged community time. This is a two-night trip (Friday to Sunday), not a local overnight like Lake Fairfax—it’s about 2.5 hours away, one-way, without traffic. Because of that, we’re asking everyone to only sign up if you can commit to the full weekend.

· We’ve reserved two group sites (D167 and D163), which gives us space for up to 30 people and 6 vehicles. The campground has potable water, flush toilets, and coin-operated showers, making it a great setup for both experienced campers and first-timers. We’ll share pickup points, carpool plans, and gear needs as the date gets closer. If something changes and you can’t come, we’ll just ask that you give us a heads-up as early as possible so we can offer your spot to someone else. We’ll aim to hold a quick Zoom call closer to the date to finalize logistics.

· Please fill out this form to help us start planning.
